Zhao and Goldstein walked up from the dock to Library Corner, looking for somewhere to sit and be alone. They walked along the edge of the Plain, the main parade grounds, Zhao careful to stay on the paths. Cadets walking on the grass could receive punishment hours. They found an empty bench beneath a bronze statue of a helmeted general with pistols at his waist and binoculars around his neck. Goldstein imagined that he was protecting them, looking out for trouble. Before they could speak, a major stopped to look at the statue. Zhao jumped to her feet and gave a snappy salute. Finally, he wandered off. At last out of the earshot of others, they couldn’t contain themselves. Goldstein and Zhao exchanged whoops of triumph and high fives.

“My God, Zhao! You were right, it’s a U-boat—a Type XXI.”

“We should go the commandant right now,” said Zhao.

Goldstein held up both palms. “Not so fast. We need to control the message here. I’m not sure if the commandant is the first person we should tell. We might be better to submit a brief publication to The Journal of Maritime Archeology, as a place marker, then hold a press conference.”

“Press conference? No, no. This is the Army. Everything needs to go through proper channels. You know how the Army would feel about a press conference, Professor.”

“Okay, okay. It’s the weekend, we don’t have to do anything right away. The sub has been there forever. The more information we have the better. We need to present ourselves as professionals, not two random divers who stumbled on a wreck. Let’s give it some thought. See if you can find anything about Type XXI U-boat missions and I’ll make a few phone calls. We have to be able to come up with some idea of what this thing is doing here. Where’s a good place to meet on Tuesday night?”

“I’ll meet you at The Firstie Club, 2000 hours. The music is a bit loud, but we can have a booth to ourselves.”

They stood to leave. “Who is that guy?” asked Goldstein, pointing at the statue behind them.

“George S. Patton, class of ’09,” answered Zhao reflexively. “It’s part of the mandatory cadet knowledge. Apparently, he was a better general than student; they say he is facing away from the library because he never went inside.”

“I feel like he’s looking out for us, Zhao. Trust me, we’re doing the right thing here.”

Zhao shook her head. “I hope you are right, sir. We’re playing with live ordnance.”

Zhao headed back to her barracks and Goldstein to his office, both intent on unraveling the mystery that lurked in the dark river below them.
